Battery chemistry
For battery storage Wolfratshausen pays only for redox flow and saltwater: €500 per kWh. The usual lithium iron phosphate (LFP) storage gets nothing. In our data no other municipality has this rule. Here is what can be shown about the three technologies.
What the market lists
The guideline itself points to the market overview of C.A.R.M.E.N. (Centrales Agrar-Rohstoff Marketing- und Energie-Netzwerk e.V., Straubing). As of July 2026 it lists 480 systems from 23 providers. 1
- 424 Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) not funded by the city
- 52 other lithium types not funded by the city
- 4 Redox flow the list’s four entries are containers of 120 to 1,600 kWh from one maker
- 0 Saltwater no entry in the list
The list is voluntary and holds manufacturers’ figures. It says nothing about what else is offered on the market.
Three technologies compared
Space and weight
Lifetime
6,000 cycles at the median (396 entries, from 3,500 to 10,000). For the capacity left after 15 years the makers assume 70 % at the median (106 entries). 1
The four containers in the market overview give 10,000 cycles. Prolux claimed 20 to 30 years of stable performance for Storac, but no cycles. The device was recalled (report of 5 December 2025), mainly on cost grounds: the service it needs did not pay for a discontinued product. 123
BlueSky Energy stated in a reply under the 2018 article: 5,000 cycles at 80 % depth of discharge, then about 70 % of the capacity. The maker went bankrupt in 2022. 45
Safety
Our sources say nothing on this that we can prove. Ask for the product’s test report.
The electrolyte is water-based (vanadium). Prolux admitted isolated leaks in early series and named one documented incident with smoke in Switzerland; later devices got a drip tray. 23
According to the maker neither flammable nor explosive, and non-toxic. That is a manufacturer’s statement from 2018. 4
Manufacturers’ figures unless noted otherwise.
Clear this up before you apply
The city funds only these two technologies and wants the application before the purchase. Ask its climate protection and energy management (tel. +49 8171 214-393, umwelt@wolfratshausen.de) which product it accepts, and get the maker’s warranty and service in writing.

How it works in Wolfratshausen
Plug-in solar: you may apply after buying.
- Battery: apply with a quote before work starts and before you buy; start only after written approval, then six months to finish
- After installation hand in the final invoice and proof of payment unasked; the battery must run for ten years
- Plug-in solar: buy and install first, then apply within three months of the invoice date, by email or at the town hall; keep it running for three years
- Processed once the documents are complete; there is no legal claim
- Cannot be combined with other public grants (federal, state, KfW)
- Rooftop PV: only as a special measure by individual decision; systems for which the federal or state governments have funding ready are excluded

What fits on the roofs in Wolfratshausen
Our solar roof check run over 380 of the roughly 3,800 detached, two-family, semi-detached and terraced houses in Wolfratshausen, with dormers, chimneys and the shade of neighbouring houses and trees.
- modules on a typical house
- 36 half of the houses: 28 to 48
- electricity a year
- 15,000 kWh with 17.6 kWp
- output lost to shade
- 0.1 % from trees and neighbouring houses
A typical house in Wolfratshausen takes 36 modules; the middle value across the 24 towns around Munich with a page of their own is 33.
This counts the house alone. For 33 % of the houses a garage or annex can be planned too: 8 more modules in the middle.
Where the roofs face
- south 27 %
- east or west 39 %
- north or flat 34 %
With a home battery
With 4,500 kWh used a year, a typical house in Wolfratshausen covers about 45 % of it from the panels alone. A battery raises the part from your own roof:
With a 10 kWh battery the house would have needed no power from the grid on 256 days in 2025.

What 10 kWp make here in a year
Facing south, 35° tilt, figures for Wolfratshausen (PVGIS): about 11,440 kWh a year, 490 kWh in December, 1,260 kWh in June.
Frequent questions
Is there a grant for solar PV in Wolfratshausen?
not funded (special measures by individual decision only)
Does Wolfratshausen fund home batteries (battery storage)?
only redox-flow and saltwater batteries: €500 per kWh, at most 8 kWh or €4,000 per building
Does Wolfratshausen fund plug-in solar?
30 % of the net total investment cost, at most €200 (one device per household; a battery with it is allowed; the maximum stays €200)
When do I have to apply?
For a battery you apply before buying and start only after written approval. For plug-in solar you buy and install first and apply afterwards, within three months of the invoice date at the latest.
How many solar modules fit on a house in Wolfratshausen?
The middle value is 36 modules with 17.6 kWp, making around 15,000 kWh a year; half of the houses take 28 to 48 modules. With a 10 kWh battery and 4,500 kWh used a year, about 93 % of the power comes from your own roof. Worked out over 380 houses in Wolfratshausen.
What is there besides the municipality?
Everywhere in Germany: the KfW loan 270 for system and battery through your bank, and 0 % VAT on panels, inverters and batteries up to 30 kWp. The Free State of Bavaria pays no grant. But in Wolfratshausen, using other public funding (federal, state, KfW) at the same time rules out the city's grant; the city excludes stacking.
