What applies in Munich

Grid operator, permits, subsidies: what applies to your roof in Munich, with sources.

Grid operator

In Munich this is usually SWM Infrastruktur GmbH, the grid company of the city utility. We check which operator covers your address, register your system there and enter it in the Marktstammdatenregister, the federal register of power plants.

Subsidies

Since the end of 2024 the city no longer pays grants for the system itself. It funds independent solar advice at 60 per cent of the fee (up to €3,000 for houses with one or two flats), tenant electricity schemes (Mieterstrom) and balcony systems. Our first consultation is free, but it does not qualify for the advice grant, because it is not independent of a supplier.

Check your roof

The city's solar potential map shows how well your roof suits solar power. Munich has about 273 megawatts of solar panels installed. They produce around 245 gigawatt hours a year: just over two per cent of the city's electricity use.

A year in Munich

What a roof here delivers in a year

A 10 kWp system facing south at 30 degrees produces around 11,200 kilowatt hours a year in Munich on average: 1,334 kWh in July, only 435 kWh in December. That is about 16 per cent more than in Hamburg.

Average of 2005 to 2023, including shade from the horizon and 14 per cent losses in the system. Calculated for our office at Am Moosfeld with PVGIS, the EU Joint Research Centre.

Feed-in tariff

31.12. 67 days left

Connect in 2026 and lock in 20 years of fixed feed-in payments

Under the government draft of 29 July 2026, new systems lose the fixed feed-in tariff from 2027. Systems running by 31 December 2026 keep it for 20 years. The law has not been passed yet.

After you order, we usually install within 4 weeks.

Balcony systems

A small system? We install those too.

Not every plug-in solar system (Steckersolargerät) hangs on a balcony. Hardly anyone mounts four modules on a garage roof or a house roof themselves. We do that for you.

The city pays €0.40 per watt of module power towards buying and installing one, for up to 800 watts per flat. That is up to €320, but never more than half the cost. Systems with up to 2,000 watts of modules and an 800-watt inverter qualify.

Important: apply before you buy or hire a company.

Frequently asked questions

Are there subsidies for solar panels in Munich?

Not for the system itself: the city stopped those grants at the end of 2024. It funds independent solar advice (60 per cent of the fee, up to €3,000 for one or two flats), tenant electricity schemes and balcony systems (€0.40 per watt, up to €320 per flat). Across Germany, solar systems for homes are exempt from VAT.

Do I need a building permit in Munich?

No. In Bavaria you do not need to apply for a building permit for solar panels on your roof. Only listed buildings and houses in a protected ensemble need a permit from the monument protection authority.

Who is the grid operator in Munich?

Usually SWM Infrastruktur GmbH. We handle the registration there and in the federal register (Marktstammdatenregister) for you.

Do you install balcony systems too?

Yes, if you cannot do it yourself, for example four modules on a garage or house roof. Apply for the city grant first, before you hire us.

Do you also work outside Munich?

Yes. From our Munich office we cover the area from the Ammersee to Ebersberg. Further east, as far as Traunstein, our team from Rott am Inn takes over.

How much does a solar system cost?

A 10 kWp system without a battery starts at €14,999 with us, including installation and registration with the grid operator. A battery, a difficult roof or a new meter cabinet add to that. Your quote shows every cost. Systems for residential buildings carry no VAT. As of 23 October 2026.

How long until the system is running?

After you order, we usually install within 4 weeks. We register the system with the grid operator and the national register (Marktstammdatenregister).

Do you advise in English?

Yes. Advice and all the back-and-forth work in English or German. We handle the German forms for the grid operator and the authorities for you.
